Military men and women are smart. They soak up knowledge and acquire skills to build successful careers after their active-duty days are past. Some transition easily into police, fire, rescue and security jobs, while others seek vocations farther afield.
“Most servicemembers go back home,” says Navy veteran Mike Schindler, CEO of the nonprofit group Operation Military Family Cares and author of the book U.S. Veterans in the Workforce, which was published last year. “They’ve got some sort of network, helping to leverage contacts that create pathways to employment and get them connected to the next mission. Most vets don’t want to simply go get a job — they need to discover what to do, find out where they can add value.”
