U.S. Senate approves Shulkin as VA Secretary

Paul Rieckhoff, founder and CEO of Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America, said he hopes the new secretary will follow through on President Donald Trump’s campaign promises to veterans.

The U.S. Senate Committee on Veterans’ Affairs unanimously approved David Shulkin as the next secretary of Veterans Affairs on Feb. 7, paving the way for him to succeed outgoing VA Secretary Robert McDonald. In less than a week, on Feb. 13, he was confirmed by the Senate with strong bipartisan support in a unanimous vote.

A physician by training, Shulkin has served as the VA’s undersecretary of health since 2015. Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA), the nonpartisan, leading voice for the post-9/11 generation of veterans, welcomed Shulkin as a capable advocate for America’s 22 million veterans, and called on the Trump administration to move quickly to fulfill his campaign promises to veterans.
