Ten veterans from all branches of the military enjoyed a weekend of shooting, hunting and fishing, thanks to a group of local outdoor recreationists who wanted to show gratitude for their service.
The program, Veterans Appreciation Outreach, began three years ago with Jerald Labovitz, a steel fabrication business owner from Alabama who owns agricultural property in the valley.
“I’m a cowboy wanna-be. That’s what brought me to the area,” he said.
Labovitz started with a ranch in Wyoming and later bought land in Nebraska. As part of a conservation program, he shut down an irrigation pivot well near the North Platte River and was looking for something to do with the former farmland. His father had served in World War II, and he started the program to show his appreciation for the nation’s veterans.
