One man’s mission is to help Houston-area veterans find work

They met in a corner booth in back of a Panera Bread just off the Tomball Tollway on a breezy Wednesday afternoon.

John McDermott, a tall, lightly-grayed man, opens a thin black binder exposing business cards, brochures and folders, and an American flag stitched onto an interior pocket. He’s there to meet David Newman, a former marine and current real estate agent with Keller Williams Reality.

They’re reminiscing about jumping out of planes.

McDermott, like Newman, is a U.S. military veteran, having served tours in locations like Bosnia and Panama.

Once accustomed to dealing with coding and decoding communications equipment as a paratrooper, McDermott is now navigating a new mission; trying to help curb veteran unemployment.
