No tax break for Duanesburg, Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake veterans

School boards push for legislation that would reimburse districts for revenues lost to tax breaks

Tax Season - April 15th is upon us.

Veterans in two local school districts won’t be getting a break on their school taxes as hoped, following a Tuesday night vote by their school boards.

The board of education in the Duanesburg Central School District in rural Schenectady County voted 6-1 against offering the tax exemption, which would have reduced taxes on veterans who own homes in the district but only by raising taxes on nonveterans. Member Mike Jackson was the lone “yes” vote.

The board cast its vote one week after the public voted on the issue in a nonbinding referendum meant to guide the board’s ultimate decision. That vote was 276-269 against the exemption.
