Springfield seeks volunteers to help with flagging of graves ahead of Veterans Day

With the approach of Veterans Day on Nov. 11, the city has issued a plea for volunteers to assist with the tradition of flagging the graves of more than 20,000 veterans buried at Springfield cemeteries.

The challenge of getting volunteers triggered a press conference on Thursday at the veterans monuments at Court Square.

Those asking for help included Veterans Director Thomas Belton, Mayor Domenic J. Sarno, U.S. Rep. Richard E. Neal and state Rep. Carlos Gonzalez.

“Our veterans and their families have sacrificed and many have given the ultimate sacrifice,” Sarno said. “We’re having issues and challenges. Every year, the cemeteries are properly flagged with the American flag. We have to send out a clarion call. We need volunteers.”
