Stand Down event for veterans in need of donations after warehouse fire

Usually by this time of the year, volunteers for the Summit County Veterans Council Stand Down event would be at their warehouse every day unloading surplus from the Department of Defense, preparing to hand it out to veterans in need.

But after a fire ravaged through a DOD warehouse in New Jersey, burning three days straight in February and destroying more than 500,000 square feet of property, including items the DOD would have donated, the volunteers’ warehouse in Akron is nearly bare.

“It’s unbelievable that a building that big could possibly burn down,” said Dan Moore, the event coordinator.
