Many employers lack confidence in hiring veterans

A new survey released this week shows that people rarely view U.S. military veterans as being valuable in the workplace, with only 26 percent of employers and 22 percent of civilians responding that those who once served in America’s armed forces are now viewed as “strategic assets.”

Leroy Mims, a 54-year-old Amarillo resident and a National Guard serviceman from 1983 to 1989, believes it. He said Thursday that because of veterans’ military experience, employers “don’t know if you’re going to flip out or trip out on the job.”

The survey was conducted with several organizations, including the George W. Bush Institute; Edelman, a public relations company, and Give an Hour, a nonprofit organization that provides counseling for troops and veterans.
