New app helps connect veterans with services

New York State is home to nearly 900,000 veterans who have fought for our way of life. As a veteran of the U.S. Army Reserve, I’m now honored to serve on the New York State Assembly Committee on Veterans’ Affairs. However, we all have a moral responsibility to care for all veterans — we all owe a great debt of gratitude to all those who make sacrifices in service to our country.

I’ve made it a priority to support pieces of legislation aimed at making civilian life easier for veterans. In the past, I’ve proudly sponsored legislation to assist self-employed veterans disabled during service, we passed the Service-Disabled Veteran Business Act, and I’ll keep working to provide pension credit for time served to veterans who now work as public employees.

Each day should serve as a reminder of the sacrifices service members make. For the brave heroes who risked their lives, a simple thank you is not enough. I will continue to work in the state Assembly to help make veterans’ lives easier and make them and their families as proud of us as we are of them.

There are many helpful programs and benefits available to veterans in New York State, but oftentimes it can be difficult for veterans to find the right programs when they seek help, and some may not know what is available to them. At our latest hearing at the State Capitol, the issue of better connecting our veterans with the best services and helping them find what they need was a topic of conversation.
