On Sunday, a group of veterans from all over the country gathered at the G.V. Montgomery Airport in Forest.
They were doing advanced training for helicopter crewmen through Team Rubicon USA, along with the Bureau of Land Management’s Jackson Hotshots. The program gives veterans a chance to develop a career that requires a similar skillset to the ones they have learned in the military.
“Team Rubicon is an organization centered on veterans and veteran reintegration and they specialize in disaster relief and preparedness and taking unique skillsets veterans have and can provide to disaster relief,” said Navy Reserve Lt. Commander Marc Gonzalez, who was here on behalf of Team Rubicon.
Pat Gustafson retired from the Army as a lieutenant colonel. An Army Nurse Corps officer, she had responded to national and international disasters, but upon retirement she wanted to find something to fill that void. She got involved with Team Rubicon, and her first deployment was to Superstorm Sandy.
