Hundreds of veterans seek help at annual Stand Down benefit fair in Yakima

Army veteran Don Dills believes that burning old chemical waste in Korea contributed to his current health problems.

But the Department of Veteran Affairs has denied the 57-year-old Wapato man’s latest claim to upgrade his disability status.

That’s why he approached the Veterans of Foreign Wars booth at the 19th annual Stand Down and Veterans Benefit Fair, held Saturday in Yakima.

 “When can you set me up with an appointment?” the retired sergeant first class asked Nadine Warren, a VFW claims consultant.

Not even minutes later, Dills had an appointment for 3 p.m. Monday. Warren will look over his paperwork and decide the next course of action.
