Early Start At OSU



Oregon State University has traditionally held its first day of classes for fall term on the last Monday in September. But that changed this year: in order to give the university time in its schedule to observe Veterans Day, the university started class Thursday.

For Darren Nguyen, a junior in business who returned from an Oregon National Guard deployment to Afghanistan in May, the decision is meaningful.

“It really is exciting,” he said. “It is the university’s way to move in the right direction … This is a pretty special day to a lot of my friends that I’ve served with.”

Nguyen, who has recently started a position with the Associated Students of OSU as the director of veterans affairs, said many student veterans have a hard time connecting with traditional students because of their different life experiences, so it’s important for the university to recognize the holiday.
