Students help ‘put a face on history’ for veterans

Nine years ago, Pam Parks was one year into her teaching career at North Iredell Middle School and decided she wanted to do something to bring history alive for her students.
She came upon the idea of asking veterans to come and speak to her class about their experiences, and she soon discovered the students and the veterans all benefited, and since that time hundreds of veterans have been welcomed into her classroom.
The veterans at North Iredell American Legion Post 113 paid tribute to Parks recently with the American Legion League of Honor Humanitarian Award.
Parks said she wanted her students to understand more about American history than what they read in history books and she could think of no better way to have the men and women who served in the military share their stories and experiences.
