Last year the public learned about chronic scandal and neglect at Veterans Affairs hospitals, and not just in Phoenix, Ariz.
In July, an Albuquerque veteran collapsed in a local Veterans Affairs hospital. Rather than rush the man over to the emergency care facility just five minutes away, VA staff called 911. It took over 30 minutes to move him 500 yards away to the facility, where the veteran died.
This occurred just as the public was learning about the VA’s hidden wait lists.
There were accountability failures across the country – in Albuquerque, one VA doctor admitted that the local “‘secret wait list’” was “either moved or was destroyed” after the Phoenix scandal came to light.
But have things improved? You’d hope so, considering a year has passed.
