Stand Down helps veterans

Pat Farrell feels like he has turned a corner. Farrell is president of the Jerry Ambrose Veterans Council, host of the Tri-State Veterans Stand Down held Friday and Saturday.

When the event started in 2012, he said, its major aim was helping homeless veterans get into housing.

This year, Farrell said, about the same number of veterans were expected to be seen, but they’ll mostly be assisted with long-term problems, such as finding work or mental health services.

“We’ve stopped the increase of the homeless population,” he said. “Now, we can make some progress in reducing it.”
