Veterans assistance available at upcoming stand down

As a soldier, Emily Quillen was trained that asking for help was a sign of weakness. So when soldiers finally request assistance, she said, it’s because they’re in a dire situation.

Madison County’s fourth Veterans Stand Down will run 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday at the Salvation Army, 1615 Meridian St.

Veterans, active service members and their families who are homeless, near homeless, unemployed, underemployed or just in need of assistance can receive food, haircuts, health screenings, clothing, personal hygiene kits, resume writing tips, employment opportunities, Veterans Affairs and Social Security benefit counseling and referrals to deal with mental health, housing and substance abuse issues.
