Harford veterans fair called a success, but many more need help, councilman says

A recent veterans information fair held at the Bel Air Armory was a success, a Harford County councilman says, with 45 veterans attending to find out about benefits, schooling, jobs, housing and health care available in the community.

But it was one vet who didn’t come that particularly caught his attention.

“This story is absolutely, I guess you would say, heart-wrenching to me,” Councilman Jim McMahan, an Army veteran, said during Tuesday night’s council meeting in Bel Air.

“One dad came up to me and said, ‘I’m a veteran, but I’m not here for myself, I’m here for my son,'” McMahan said. When he asked where the son was, the father replied, “He can’t come.”
