Nashville veterans build futures as entrepreneurs

Michael Tacke, a Green Beret who has been on active duty for 14 years, had lots of time to think about what he wanted to do with his life while serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. He realized he wanted to run his own business and be his own boss when he returned to civilian life.

“I like the freedom to decide how much you’re worth,” Tacke said. “I like leading and building a team, and entrepreneurship requires that.”

He began working in the trucking industry in Hermitage with his wife’s family and launched his own freight company, Veterans Heavy Haul Trucking. To build the business more effectively, he turned to Bunker Labs, a new business program in Nashville for veterans. There, he saw an opportunity to solve inefficiencies in truck permits and expanded his focus.
