Portage forms committee to help educate veterans

Dan Orlich and Tom Pappas spent the last 16 months traveling some 3,000 miles, attending town hall meetings for veterans.

“We uncovered that there’s so much that is perplexing to veterans,” said Pappas, a Vietnam veteran, pointing to a recent Veterans Administration survey that says two of three veterans have little or no knowledge of state or federal benefits are available to them. Then there’s the entire Veteran Administration system, said Orlich.

“We learned things that shocked us. We found you that young vets are being discharged without any information. They’re often told to go to the VA. But the VA has no orientation, no classes,” said Orlich, also a Vietnam veteran.

The two Portage residents approached Mayor James Snyder and asked he form a Veterans Committee. Snyder agreed.
